About Brenda McCall

I think I always wanted to be a nurse. My family will certainly testify to the amount of hours I spent trying to swathe them in bandages.

However, when I found out that it was possible to train as a psychiatric nurse, there was no doubt in my mind that this was the job for me.

I began my RMN training at Glasgow Eastern College of Nursing and Midwifery. The bulk of my career was in Acute Adult Admission and Care of the Elderly.

On this journey, I moved from lowly staff nurse to the dizzy heights of ward manager. Along the way, I managed to acquire a variety of skills which prove very useful in my work with Inner Energy.

These include:
  • Moving and Handling
(ideal for getting delegates seated on our training courses)
  • Management of Aggression
(comes in handy when I ask delegates to pay outstanding balances)
  • Counselling
(often needed once cash has been extracted)
  • Management
(always necessary to keep Helen under control)

In my job, I had 24hr responsibility for the patients in my ward, complete managerial responsibility for the staff in my ward and general all-round accountability for everything from the temperature of the porridge to liasing with psychiatrist-led multi-disciplinary teams.

I frequently also had the added bonus of looking after the entire hospital (yes, all the patients, all the staff and all the wards), the out-of-hours crisis intervention team and indeed every potential psychiatric event (outside office hours) within the Trust.

Is it any wonder I got a bit stressed? Consequently, I now refer to myself as a recovering psychiatric nurse.

During my time in nursing, I came to realise that, despite the prevailing wisdom, there are many effective treatment approaches other than those provided by a medical model.

I became increasingly uncomfortable with any treatment approach that does not place the “patient” at the centre of the process. It was hard to maintain personal integrity in a “Doctor knows best” environment when I had countless examples of the patient instinctively knowing better!

Since leaving nursing, I divide my time between my job as Support Worker on a telephone crisis line and my work with Helen at Inner Energy. (Hopefully, you’ll understand if I don’t always answer your emails straight away – although I try. I really do!) [Read about Helen]
